German Debating
This year the 5th year German class is entered in the Goethe Institut German Debating competition.
The team is made up of Jennifer O’Brien (captain), Isabelle Dillon, Laura Buckley and Emily Coffee, with substitute Philippa Brazil.
Their first round debate took place on Wednesday 18th October against Tallaght Community School at 2pm. The motion was Koedukative Schulen bereiten besser auf das Leben vor als reine Mädchen- oder Jungenschulen, (co-educational schools prepare better for life, than single-sex schools). Mount Anville was for the motion.
The team, with their teacher Ms Fullam and the rest of the German class, travelled by bus to Tallaght Community School on Wednesday and met the opposing team and their teacher. The debate was very interesting with both sides making valid points and ironically pointing out the advantages of the other side’s own school situation, as Tallaght CS is a co-educational school.
Jen, Isabelle, Laura and Emily were really strong on rebuttals and performed to a very high standard. Afterwards the two judges retired to another room to make their decision, and Mount Anville were delighted to hear that they won!
The students from Tallaght CS had prepared sandwiches, treats, coffee and tea for all involved and it was lovely to chat to students from another school about their experiences.
Round two will take place in the next month.
